World Environment Day: 3 ways to bring damaged ecosystems back to life

On June 5th, we celebrate World Environment Day, the official day designated by the United Nations to bring awareness and support actions to protect the environment. 

This year in 2021, all eyes will be on one specific and important theme: ecosystem restoration.

Why is it important to restore damaged ecosystems?

“An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscapes, work together to form a bubble of life.” – National Geographic

We, as human beings, depend on the health of our ecosystems. Yet we are destroying them. 

Restoring our damaged ecosystems has to become a priority if we want to keep living a healthy life. Without healthy ecosystems, we will lack crucial elements for our survival such as clean water and air. 

3 ways to bring damaged ecosystems back to life

If we may feel hopeless and powerless facing the current environmental crisis, there are still actions we can take now to have a positive impact on the situation! Both collective and individual efforts are essential.

1. Start a compost at home

Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic waste such as food and yard waste into healthy fertilizer. In other words, it transforms organic waste back into the earth. 

It is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce your waste and your impact on the environment.

2. Rewild your garden

  • introducing a source of water
  • planting wildflowers and local plant species

  • using organic methods to feed your soil (such as compost fertilizer as seen in our previous paragraph)

Give it a try and see the numbers of birds, bees, butterflies, and other wonderful living beings showing up again.

3. Reduce your meat consumption

Changing your diet to eat less meat is going to benefit both you and your body, the animals, and the planet! 

Meat production consumes a lot of resources. It is the cause of deforestation ( animals and the food they eat need a lot of space), it uses fossil fuell and a lot of water to produce and transport the meat, and the methane produced by the animals (mainly cows) is harmful to the environment as well. 

Going towards vegetarianism or veganism is an excellent individual action to take. Don’t worry, you don’t need to never eat meat again. Start by going vegetarian one day a week for example or every day but the weekend. You will already start making an impact.
